1 Perinatal Palliative Care: A Primary Year in Review Jennifer Jonely, MSN, CPLC, RNC-OB St Luke’s Health System, 190 East Bannock, Boise, Idaho Description Program evaluation is a major focus for the intersection of clinical care and fiscal responsibility. Collection of data over the first year of existence for a new program showed that needs were met for this health system. This data can be used by others to anticipate and gauge productivity and utilization for end of life care in the perinatal arena. Continued data collection is ongoing and shows even further growth of the service. Background Information A new Perinatal Palliative Care and Loss program called Butterfly’s Embrace started in Boise, Idaho in July 2012. Hospital physicians and midwives do between 320-370 deliveries per month. The hospital employs four maternal/fetal medicine physicians for a high-risk obstetrics service and seven neonatologists staffing a level III neonatal intensive care nursery. The hospital is becoming part of a larger system of hospitals and clinics so some of the data collected are from shared hospital and regional sites. Data were collected for a full year on the scope of the service, time spent, and inputs and outputs accomplished. The data presented here represent a.3 FTE position for a Perinatal Palliative Care and Loss Coordinator. Evaluation The program has become permanent and is an exemplar for our fourth Magnet re-designation in the category of Exemplary Professional Practice as an example with supporting evidence of nurses partnering with patients and families to improve systems of care at the unit, service line or organizational level. Furthermore within the future strategic plan, our institution has a goal for advanced certification for palliative care from the Joint Commission which recognizes a need for the ability to provide palliative care to the entire inpatient population.
