Global Awareness Event Proposal : An event to raise awareness for human right issues around the world

What is the event Similar to a science fair An evening in the school gymnasium Open to the community Students will give individual presentations regarding a selected topic

What topics will be discussed? Each student will select from a list of potential human right issues that he or she would like to discuss Each topic will be discussed from a personal, social, and cultural point of view

What are human right issues? In essence, human rights workers are creating an effort to protect the rights of the human race Topics for the event will include: Poverty Clean water initiatives Human trafficking Women’s rights Adoption

How will we bring attention to the event? Flyers, brochures, etc. Information will be posted to the school website Students will be required to visit at least one local business, stakeholder, or prominent community member each Administration will inform other schools and/or administrative workers of the event

Why a global awareness event? “Global awareness is the first step towards cross- cultural competency” (Doppen & An, 2014) Will bring to light how we have thought in the past unconsciously and will help to reshape beliefs Ideally will diminish or abolish any prejudices and discriminations previously in existence Will raise awareness and spark a movement of resolution

How does this apply to the student’s education? Meets several Virginia SOLs, which include, but are not limited to: research, reading, writing, and presentation skills Strengthen the student’s awareness of human right issues in his or her home country Teach students the importance of being empowered to make a difference

What will the presentation look like? Each presentation will change with each individual student The minimum requirement will be a display board containing information about the issue, addressing the issue from multiple perspectives, and presenting a solution The presentation can be more extensive and interactive if the student so chooses

What is the projected result of the event? Surveys for attendees and students Raised awareness of human right issues around the globe Diminished prejudices and biases Committed assistance from members of the community, stakeholders, and parents.

How does this create a culturally responsive teaching environment? Communication of high expectations Teacher as facilitator Positive perspective on parents and families of culturally and linguistically diverse students Student-centered, student- controlled classroom discourse
