Sun, soil and air Starter: Write a word and chemical equation for photosynthesis

Learning Objectives Describe how water and carbon dioxide get to leaves Explain how plant organs and cells are adapted to their functions Explain why water is needed by plants

How are plants adapted? How can leaves get more sunlight How can roots get more water?

Roots Allow water into the plant They have special extensions called root hair cells to reach even further

And the water travels through the Xylem cells: strong, wide dead cells Using this information answer the questions on page 34

Leaves Waxy cuticle: on top to stop water evaporating Palisade layer: Closely packed cells to catch as much sunlight as possible Mesophyll layer: Air spaces to let CO2 get in Guard Cell: found around holes in the leaf where water can get in an out Complete these labels in your booklet

Correct labels, now complete the rest of the page in your booklet

Measuring Transpiration

Transpiration Idea: The bag stops water getting into the bag from the outside Water evaporates through the leaves No water enters the mud because of the bag So the weight decreases

Learning Objectives Describe how water and carbon dioxide get to leaves Explain how plant organs and cells are adapted to their functions Explain why water is needed by plants
