Modal verbs It’s too late. You should be in bed by now. Students can eat healthier food in the school canteen. Sorry, you mustn’t eat in the school canteen. Mum, may I have a Big Mac today? Jim can cook very well. Parents should educate their children to eat well. It’s getting very dark. It might rain. I must hurry up. It’s getting late.

Modal verbs - rules Modal verbs are special verbs. They don’t take an s in the third person singular: I can swim. You can swim. He/she/it can swim. We can swim. You can swim. They can swim.

Modal verbs - rules They are followed by na infinitive without to. I can cook very well. They don’t need an auxiliary verb in the negative or interrogative forms. May I come in? I can’t cook dinner tonight.
