Source Created or Published [19th century?] Digital Image Type FSL collection Source Call Number ART Box A616 no.4 (size S) HAMNET CATALOG RECORD ___ Title (Hamnet) [Two women and a man in Elizabethan dress] [graphic]. Date of Creation or Publ. (Hamnet) [19th century?] Physical Description (Hamnet) 1 drawing : watercolor with pencil indications ; 18.7 x 15.8 cm. Subject (Hamnet) Drawings -- 19th century. Associated Name (Hamnet) Chalon, Alfred Edward, 1780-1860, attributed name. Associated Name (Hamnet) Wright, John Massey, 1777-1866, attributed name. Associated Name (Hamnet) Meadows, Joseph Kenny, 1790-1874, attributed name. Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Attributions of the labels have been rejected due to the work's dissimilarity to other items in the FSL attributed to Wright. Labeling was possibly done by the seller. The item is somewhat similar in style to the work of Kenny Meadows or A.E. Chalon. Notes (Hamnet) History: Design is not similar to depictions in known engravings illustrating Twelfth night. Though labeled on verso "Scene from Shakespeare" and on mat "Twelfth night" the drawing is not readily identifiable as depicting a specific scene from Shakespeare's plays. Notes (Hamnet) In pencil on verso "J.M. Wright/Scene from Shakespeare/H[?]/M...[?], upper right corner of verso "15", lower left 3 letters or numbers indecipherable. Removed from a French mat labeled "Twelfth night/ J.M. Wright." Vignette on wove paper. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Drawing was purchased along with a number of items on Shakespearean subjects, many attributed to John Masey Wright. The Folgers bought this Shakespearean collection from Maggs Bros. in Dec. of 1922. Unfortunately the Maggs description of the "three parcels of drawings" is no longer found in the case file. (Formerly ART Inv. 286 no. 25). Notes (Hamnet) Subject: The drawing pictures three figures in the grove of a wood. At right, a girl dressed in white, her right arm held by an older woman in blue (standing center) who holds the arm with her left hand and points to the girl with her right. The older woman's head is turned profile to left and is looking down at a man in red, kneeling, his head bowed and his left arm raised. The woman in blue appears to be chastising the man. The characters are dressed in Elizabethan costume. Notes (Hamnet) This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
