Thoughts to ponder… In all, about 25,000 Mexican and 12,700 American soldiers died as a result of the Mexican War. These deaths occurred so that America could fulfill its Manifest Destiny and become a “two-ocean country.” Manifest Destiny-belief that the U.S. should expand to the Pacific Ocean. Although California entered the Union as a free state in 1850, the rest of the land the U.S. gained from the Mexican War opened up to slavery until this practiced was outlawed at the end of America’s Civil War. If you had to convince U.S. citizens to vote for or against the Manifest Destiny, what would you say?

Chapter 13: Lesson 3 The discovery of gold in California led to rapid settlement in the region. James Marshall discovers gold at Sutter’s Mill leading to a gold rush of forty- niners in 1849. California becomes a “free” state in 1850. Forty-niners traveled the California Trail and by ships to San Francisco. Gold was rarely found. Supplies and services were most successful (Wilson- hotels/restaurants and Strauss-pants). Discrimination against foreigners prevailed and miners paid a $20 tax.
