Trikala General information: Trikala, with a population of about 75.000, is situated in central Greece. It combines the characteristics of a modern, lively city along with its traditional quarters where visitors can go shopping, drink coffee or dine. The river Litheos, which flows through the city, completes its natural beauty. Trikala is a picturesque and vivid city with numerous choices that it’s definitely worth visiting it. Sightseeing: The city has many sites such as the Clock Tower, which is the city’s landmark, the Medieval Fortress with a great view of the city, the Old City district (Varoussi and Manavika), Asclepieion, Lithaios River, the Central Bridge, Matsopoulos Mill, an old stone water mill which is used as a cultural center and becomes the Mill of Elves during the Christmas season, the Hill of Profitis Elias with the Zoo and Asklipiou street, the city’s central pedestrial zone. Also, near Trikala one can visit Elati, a traditional mountainous village, popular for hiking, climbing, horse riding, mountain biking and skiing, Plastiras Lake and Meteora, the famous gigantic rocks on top of which there are many monasteries.

Eat & Drink: Visitors can try delicious dishes made with local products such as pork and leek sausage, tzatziki, cheese, butter, yoghurt, buttermilk, melons and watermelons, fresh vegetables, honey, herbs and spices, trahanas (type of pasta), walnuts, wine and tsipouro (drink made from distilled grape marc). Some very popular dishes are: gyros-doner, souvlaki, chicken with pligouri (cracked wheat),kontosouvli ( meat on a spit), fried or stuffed courgette flowers, cheese or spinach pie and for dessert walnut or milk pie, spoon sweets, halvas (type of sweet made from sesame seeds) and loukoumia (a sweet treat). What to buy: butter, feta cheese, honey, sausages, spoon sweets, herbs, trahanas (type of pasta for cooking soup) and walnuts. How to reach the city: There are daily buses from Trikala to the biggest cities of Greece. There is also a regular train service which links Trikala to Athens or Thessaloniki with many intermediate stops to other cities. Finally, there are many highways if you choose to travel by car. Weather: It is wet and cold in the winter, with rare snowfalls and hot and humid during the summer.
