11 Quantification of hydrokinetic resources in Dover harbour Alexei SENTCHEV & Maxime THIEBAUT Meeting.... (à changer) City, Date (à changer) Laboratoire d’Océanologie et de Géosciences, Wimereux, France

2 Objective of Dover harbour authority : Deliver a sustainable port operation to minimise its environmental impact. Quantify the hydrokinetic resources in Dover harbour. Tidal energy exploitation. LOG contribution : Current meter ADCP deployment ( Koursk device) : September, 1st-2nd 2014 Boat position located each second by GPS. Velocities measurement on several depth (25 cm interval) at high rate.

3 Kriging interpolation of ADCP data

4 Select of the better site to marine turbines installation. Average magnitude. 2 areas where 1.2 m/s is exceeded. High maritime traffic in this zone : unsuitable area. Best emplacement to marine turbines deployment. ‹ V current surface › = 1.25 m/s Geographic coordinates : 51°06’48.6”N ± 1.8” ; 1°20’44.9” ± 2.5” Power available : ( Houlsby, 2008) P mean = 23.7 kW for a turbine of 10 m diameter (velocity decrease with depth takes into account)

5 Conclusion Energy flux is relatively low compared to other contemporary sites. For a turbine of 10 m diameter : P mean = 23.7 kW. However during flood tide, in the selected emplacement V current surface = 1.9 m/s, so the power available at level of turbine is about 83,4 kW. The three surveys occurred during average tide bringing about low velocities so low power available. 2 days of ADCP deployment
