Sound Energy Notes

Sound Energy Sound energy is a form of energy caused by vibrations. Sound energy helps us hear voices, noises, and music. Some sources of sound: vocal chords, drums, dog barking, electric guitar

How Sound Travels: Sound can travel in all directions and through all materials, except for space. Sound travels fastest through solids, then liquids, and least fast through gases. The more tightly packed together the particles are in a material, the faster the sound travels through that material. Sound cannot travel through space, because there are no particles in space.

What happens when sound hits an Object:
The waves can bounce back (echo) The waves can be absorbed (like by a carpet) The waves can travel through objects (like when music can be heard through concrete walls)

How we hear sound . . . The vibrations from an object cause particles in the air to bump into each other and transmit the vibration to your ear. Inside your ear, the vibrations of the particles touch your eardrum and cause it to send signals to your brain.

The Speed of sound: The Speed of Sound is approximately 768 mph or traveling 1 mile in 5 seconds.
