Train schools, community partners, and family leaders to empower families with High Impact Home Strategies (HIHS) HIHS online resources in conjunction with family networks to support families, including those who cannot come to school Schools connect families in greater need to more intensive supports through their schools, Family and Community Engagement Department, other central office departments, or community partners 8

9 Talk with your child as much as possible and in the language in which you are comfortable. Your talk that explains, tells stories, or deals with past or future is most impactful. Seek “brain- building” activities for your child because learning happens anytime, anywhere. Read with your child. This doesn’t have to be at bedtime and could be a magazine versus a storybook. If you don’t read, tell a story about the pictures in a book. 10 Communicate with the school and teachers about your student’s progress on A-G requirements, grades, and enrollment in advanced coursework. Support your student in learning to become independent in and out of school Talk with your student about how their learning and education connects to their future. Annual, district-wide family engagement survey to identify strengths and improvement areas in family engagement by sub-group, school and cluster Area Superintendents lead survey implementation and efforts in this area At school site level, design Family Engagement Plan based on survey results, student academic needs, and/or identified Design Thinking priorities 14

17 Next Steps at Schools and Clusters 1.Identify family networks and resources in every cluster 2.New family and community engagement teams, train other staff, parent leaders to lead Design Thinking 3.Train new and existing family leaders to connect with other families to teach High Impact Home Strategies 4.Design online learning of High Impact Home Strategies as a resource for parent learning 5.Implement pilot survey in fall of 2016 at some schools and districtwide in spring of 2017 6.Write a Family Engagement Plan Building the conditions to empower each and every family to support their student’s learning. 17

18 Next Steps: Family and Community Engagement Department 1.Rename department to reflect reorganization 2.Hire Executive Director to lead this work at Cabinet level 3.Hire family and community engagement staff to build capacity for family engagement at Clusters and schools 4.Implement survey (pilot and district wide at school sites) 5.Create district committee (departments) to align efforts and resources on family engagement 6.Work collaboratively with a committee of parents, community and staff to give input and assist with direction of the framework Building the conditions to empower each and every family to support their student’s learning. 18
