The knight’s initial strength reveals his determination and hopefulness to find Eldorado. The knight begins his quest for Eldorado dressed “gaily” (1) and riding “gallantly” (2) on his horse, demonstrating how strong and prepared he is for the long journey. The alliteration of the guttural g-sound reinforces the strength with which the knight undertakes his journey. Journeying a long time, the knight travels in “sunshine and in shadow” (3), suggesting not only that he has traveled for many days and nights – much of his life, that is – but also that his travels have been both easy and challenging. Though he has faced difficulty in his quest, the knight travels while “singing a song” (5), highlighted by the sing-songy rhyme scheme: AABCCB and 447447 meter of the stanza. The quiet S- sounds in “sunshine” (3), “shadow” (3), “singing” (5), and “song” (5) indicate the knight’s ease of travel and reinforce that even with the difficulty of his quest, the knight joyfully and easily travels with a great deal of hope. With his dress and his signing, the knight appears to be physically and emotionally ready to realize his dream of finding Eldorado.
