Introducing e-Learning and Virtual Classroom Issues By LaTonya Bartell Revised for EDU 697

What is e-Learning? Using electronic technologies to create learning

How do we use it? By implementing different types of tools.

Varieties of e-Learning Standalone courses Learning games and simulations Mobile learning Social learning Virtual-classroom courses (Horton, 2011, p3)

Why Collaboration Tools They help to share and build relationships.

Examples of collaborating tools Blogs Wikis Social Networking Software Media sharing

How can we Communicate, Collaborate, and Interact? Using blogs and wikis Media Sharing Twitter

What are Instructional Design Models? Models which require selecting, organizing, and specifying the learning experiences (Horton, 2011, 3)

Examples of instructional design models? 4C-ID Model (Jeroen van Merriënboer) Algo-Heuristic Theory (Lev Landa) ADDIE Model ARCS (John Keller) ASSURE (Heinich, Molenda, Russel, and Smaldino) Backward Design (Wiggins & McTighe) ( Instructional, 2014)

What is its role? An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem. Enables the designer to negotiate her design.

How can we use it? Step by step guides directing the designer through a series of stages deemed necessary to produce effective instructional units. (Shutkin, 2014)

How to enhance learning through technology? By using various technology and programs to introduce topics

Why use Media? Allows the student to see the information

The Advantages of Media for Students: Enables students to see concepts and new examples Students can experience worlds beyond their own, especially if the media is sharply different from their local environment. (Why, 2014)

Summary e-learning is the use of electronic technologies to create learning experiences. Using a great instructional design model and different forms of technology will increase the learning in your class.
