Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you—and your influence on the ocean. An ocean-literate person: understands the Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts about the functioning of the ocean; can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way; and is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources.

Standards By Design: Fifth Grade 5.2 Interaction and Change: Force, energy, matter, and organisms interact within living and non-living systems. 5.2P.1 Describe how friction, gravity, and magnetic forces affect objects on or near Earth. 5.2L.1 Explain the interdependence of plants, animals, and environment, and how adaptation influences survival. 5.2E.1 Explain how the energy from the sun affects Earth’s weather and climate.
