The Land Five parts Piney Woods- Four national forests Gulf Coastal Plain- Many Bays and bayous where various rivers empty into Gulf of Mexico South Texas Plain- Dry land with thorny bush Post Oak Belt- Rolling hills and prairie Blackland Prairie- rich, dark soil Largest region in Texas Third of the state Extends to the east to Atlantic Ocean

Industry Natural: Oil, gas, lignite, limestone, gravel, and lumber Crops: cotton, corn, sorghum, grains Large cattle ranch- King Ranch and fishing is important to this region Area helps Texas be in the top five states for fresh vegetables Also know for its orchards of citrus fruits

Major Cities Houston- Started as a port city Now it’s a major center for trade with foreign countries Home to: NASA, Texas Medical Center, artists San Antonio- Known for it’s cultures Home to: Riverwalk and Alamo Dallas- Started as a trading post or small frontier store Now it’s a leading business center

Major Cities Cont. Austin Started as our state capital Now it remains our capital Home to several universities Other cities include: Longview Galveston Brownsville Laredo Bryan/College Station Waco

Landmarks Padre Islands Barrier island Longest sand beach in the US The beaches are set aside to be preserved It’s called Padre Island National Seashore
