If you start with the number of deaths attributed to firefighters with a known heart condition, and add in age, other health conditions, and smoking, that number accounts for roughly 75% of all firefighter deaths 3. In 8 to 12 SCD root cause factors are incomplete

If this clot cuts off the blood flow completely, the part of the heart muscle supplied by that artery begins to die.

14 Funding and support for this project has been provided by the State of Washington, Department of Labor & Industries, Safety & Health Investment Projects (SHIP) WHAT DOES A HEART ATTACK FEEL LIKE Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness

15 Funding and support for this project has been provided by the State of Washington, Department of Labor & Industries, Safety & Health Investment Projects (SHIP) WHAT IS A STROKE An Ischemic Stroke (the most common type) happens when a blood vessel that feeds the brain gets blocked, usually from a blood clot. When the blood supply to a part of the brain is shut off, brain cells will die.

Ask the person to smile. Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "the sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?
