1. Toys from the past – Nursery and Reception Successful Learners Areas of Learning As historians we will discover toys that children played with in the past. As writers we will explain why our favourite toys mean so much to us. As designers we will discover how different toys work and how this has changed over time. As scientist we will explore why toy boxes make good homes for animals. Characteristics of Effective Learning Playing and ExploringActive LearningCreating and Thinking Critically Children will explore old toys from the past, they will have time to play with them and compare them to toys children play with in the present. Children will also spend some time at the Beacon museum exploring toys from the past in more detail. Through forest school sessions, children will explore animals nests and have chance to build and design their own nests and feeders. Children will learn how to use old toys such as the hoop, through the development of new skills. Through the use of our focus book, children will explore outside looking at how a toy box could act as the perfect nest for animals. During outside play children will spend time playing games from the past (suggested by teachers and parents)..Children will spend time creating there own puppets using different materials. Through circle time and literacy lessons we will spend time discussing why some toys mean more to us than others and why they mean so much to us. We will also think about the Kipper story and how we would feel if something happened to our favourite toys. We will also use the book to think about different people we talk to when we are upset/happy/scared.

2. Key Skills in the Early Years Communication and LanguagePersonal, Social and Emotional Development Physical Development We will describe and explain our preferences to different toys. We will discuss why some people like different toys to us, and also discuss why some stories mean more to us than others. We will develop our listening skills and learn to respond to each others opinions. As it is the new school year, we will spend circle time looking at how to make new friends, and look after our friends. We will use the focus book to explore different feelings. We will explore different toys and explain why we have favourites. We will discuss why some toys have more meaning to us than others. We will listen to each other and respect each others views. We will work together to discover new skills and understanding. We will discuss how different things make us feel and what we can do to help others. We will develop a sympathy for animals and an understanding of how to look after them. Children will develop new skills through interaction with different toys from the past. Children will also take part in games which children played in the past. PE sessions will also be led by onside coaching. Understanding the World Children will explore toys from the past and peoples preferences to different toys. Children will also explore why animals make nests, and what materials they need to make them. Children will spend time in the outside environment to help collect materials to make their own nests and feeders. Literacy Children will begin their new phase of phonics (1,2&3). We will be using Kipper’s Toy Box as our theme book. When reading this, and other books, we will spend time identifying repetition and rhyming words. We will also spend time looking at feelings the characters go through in the book. Expressive Arts and Design Children will have time to create their own toy box for their favourite toys. They will also collect materials from outside to make a nest which would protect animals in the winter. Children will also spend time in drama sessions retelling the story of Kipper’s Toybox, and exploring different emotions. Mathematics Children will spend this term looking at number, place value, and adding together simple single digit numbers. We will do this in the style of Kipper, counting collections of toys, the ears on our teddies, the bumps on our Lego bricks etc. Children will also focus on number formation through play with toys such as sand and playdough.
