HYDROELECTRIC DAMS EFFECTS ON POPULATION OF AMERICAN SHAD ZACH SPICKLER GT INDEPENDENT RESEARCH PD: 1
9
GT INDEPENDENT RESEARCH Get ahead Become more responsible and professional GT Credit, with a nice teacher! Apparently, it looks good on résumés. Set yourselves apart!
10
People in THIS class! Manaahil Rao- Can the development of REM sleep behavioral disorders directly lead to Lewy body disorder in patients aged 50-60 years old? Melissa Ho-How does gene expression profiling affect the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia? Also, Sanjay G. is in the GT IR

UMBC Library field trip- Nov.

GT INTERN MENTOR Take this AFTER GT Research The pictures you saw in the beginning were mentor students LEAVE the school to go to an office or a laboratory to conduct research under a the advisory of a mentor Example places- Hopkins, Ravens Stadium, NASA, WFES, Howard County Council NOTE: students must provide their own transportation, and each student must complete an average 5 hours a week at their site.

The boring part… Requirements for BOTH IR & IM 32 annotated sources 8-10 page final paper In class and out of class presentations

Now for me… What are the effect of East coast hydroelectric dams on the population of American Shad? (Alossa sapidissima)
16
My Interest I have always loved ecology and the environment

American Shad Facts! Can grow up to 30” in length Are primarily in Susquehanna, and Pateuxant Rivers in MD Spawning- females can lay up to 600,000 eggs. They almost disappeared from bay due to overfishing
21
Hydroelectric Dam Facts! Their purpose is to generate energy There is little, if any, fish transportation There are several major ecological problems with dams

Fish Migration

Summary In conclusion: I will be and have been studying the effect of hydroelectric dams on American Shad population. American Shad used to be one of the most plentiful and valuable fish the Chesapeake Bay Hydroelectric dams, and dams in general, present many ecological problems, like the halting of fish migration. I recommend this class to ANYONE that thinks they know what career they want to pursue, or to any responsible person who wants an extra GT elective.

Now I decided to take this class because: I wanted the GT credit I had been sure that I would pursue a career in the environmental field Now-I am not longer very interested in environmental science/ecology, and if I had to take this class again, I would research a topic involving law/law enforcement.
