The piano (originally called pianoforte which meant soft-loud) came from the keyboard section. Unlike the rest of the keyboard family (the harpsichord and organ) the piano can play loud and soft dynamics because it hammers the strings, unlike the harpsichord which plucks the strings.

3. What is the range of a piano? The range of the piano is from a low A to a top C which is a whopping 7.3 octaves. Almost every modern piano has 52 white keys and 36 black keys for a total of 88 keys. Many older pianos only have 85 keys (seven octaves from A 0 to A 7 ).
