Farmers Farmers had to stick together to survive. They were hit hard by the Dust Bowl, which was when a huge dust storm that destroyed the soil and crops. Farms were destroyed, animals and plants were killed.

Young Americans Many young Americans traveled by illegally jumping on trains. Some joined radical political parties such as the socialist and communist.

Have a drink! Feb 1933: After 15 Years the 21 st amendment is passed and prohibition is repealed. The Empire State Building was built giving Americans a sign of hope.

New Era The good times of the 1920’s were over shown by: Babe Ruth retires Calvin Coolidge dies Al Capone goes to jail Henry Ford goes from hero to villain by workers

Fall Guy Herbert Hoover became unpopular and was blamed for the depression. Hoover gave little federal help to the poor.

Hoovervilles Homeless, many people set up tents or shacks to live in. These little towns were named after President Hoover. They were known as Hoovervilles.

The original face of hope Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) won the primary to run against Hoover in 1932. FDR said that the government needed to help the people. Offers American’s a New Deal.

Difference in Philosophies FDR represented action vs. Hoover who represented non-action from the government. FDR crushed Hoover and won easily.
