ENERGY The ability to do or cause change a process and a “thing” a verb and a noun A transformation from one form to another Transfer form one object to another –What are some examples of this?

Sources of Energy Primary sources of Energy- the naturally occurring source of where energy can be generated from Primary sources of energy are -Sun - Water - Wind - Geothermal - Fossil fuels

Sources cont. Secondary Energy Sources- how we utilize a primary source to generate power - Solar Panels - Wind turbines - Dams - Power plants -Geothermal plants

Sun to Solar panels A solar panel uses light energy and converts it to electricity by releasing electrons from atoms

Water to Dams Potential energy of water falling with the kinetic energy of water flowing through turbines which powers a generator to create electricity

Wind to Wind turbines The turbine blades capture the kinetic energy in wind. they start moving and a generator turns that rotational energy into electricity.

fossil fuels (coal) to power plants Coal is burned and the heat produced is used to turn water into steam at high pressure. This steam turns a windmill-like device called a turbine connected to an electricity generator.

Earth heat (geothermal) to power plants Super-heated water or steam from earth's interior is utilized in running the turbines of a conventional power plant to generate electricity.

Wave Power At a wave power station, the waves arriving cause the water in the chamber to rise and fall, which means that air is forced in and out of the hole in the top of the chamber. We place a turbine in this hole, which is turned by the air rushing in and out. The turbine turns a generator.

Biofuel -a type of fuel whose energy is derived from biological carbon fixation. -Biofuels include fuels derived from biomass conversion, as well as solid biomass, liquid fuels and various biogases

Sources of E questions Write 10 HIGHER LEVEL questions about energy sources. Questions MUST make you think not just recall information (not yes or no, one word answers) CONSULT with your classmates for possible answers to your questions if they are opinion questions get others opinion For homework find the answers (using internet, magazines, other people books etc) to your questions and bring them to class on TOMORROW to be TURNED IN Be ready to discuss your questions in DETAIL by the end of the week USE one of these words from the categories for EACH question COMPREHENSION Summarize Discuss Translate Identify Paraphrase Differentiate Describe APPLICATION Simulate Apply Demonstrate Exhibit Manipulate Employ Illustrate ANALYSIS Interpret Examine Distinguish Inquire Compare Categorize Analyze SYNTHESIS Hypothesize Develop Predict Incorporate Propose Formulate Imagine
