PROCEDURE FOR USE OF HORIZONTAL BAND SAW (Revision 1 – 11th January 2011) Toolbox Talk

HAZARDS AND RISKS The main hazards associated with the use of horizontal band saws are: Cuts to hands, amputation of fingers if contact made with the moving blade Entanglement in the moving blade Injury to the eyes from flying debris AUTHORISED PERSONS The horizontal band saw must not be operated or blades changed/adjusted by persons not authorised to do so. Lists of those persons trained and authorised to operate the horizontal band saw and those authorised to change/adjust blades are kept by the Senior Maintenance Engineer and displayed at Bedford Road and Rowett workshops.

PPE TO BE WORN WHEN USING HORIZONTAL BAND SAW Safety glasses/goggles. Hearing protection – if appropriate for the task. Loose fitting clothing, jewellery, scarves or anything else that could become entangled in the wheel must not be worn. Rings must be removed or taped over. Long hair must be tied back. No PPE being worn Correct PPE being worn 

PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING AND ADJUSTING BLADES Gloves and appropriate workwear covering arms (e.g. boilersuit) must be worn when uncoiling new blades. The machine must be electrically isolated and the padlock of the person changing the blade applied prior to changing blades.

PROCEDURE FOR OPERATION Examine the floor area around the bandsaw to ensure there are no slip or trip hazards. Examine the blade prior starting a new job for signs of damage or wear. Never start the machine with the workpiece against the blade. Allow the saw to come to full speed before cutting the workpiece, lift the head down slowly onto the workpiece – do not drop or force the blade against the workpiece. Workpiece against blade Workpiece not against blade 

Never start the machine until the workpiece is firmly secured in the vice, never hand hold the workpiece. Never make adjustments or alterations whilst the machine is running. If the machine vibrates abnormally when cutting, stop the machine immediately and contact one of the authorised persons for assistance. Ensure that any long workpieces are adequately supported (both parts), and guarded.
