TODAY’S TASK List 3 things you do on a regular basis that are GOOD for the environment List 3 things you do on a regular basis that are BAD for the environment
2
AN INTRO TO ECOSYSTEMS
3
What is an Ecosystem? An ecosystem consists of all the interacting parts of a biological community and its environment. It is a specific area, in which climate, landscape, animals and plants are constantly interacting This includes PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING!!! ***WRITE THIS***
4
What Makes up an Ecosystem? Every ecosystem has 2 parts: BIOTIC FACTORS The living parts of an ecosystem Plants, animals, microorganisms, etc. ABIOTIC FACTORS The non-living parts of an ecosystem Water, oxygen, light, soil, nutrients, etc. ***WRITE THIS***
5
List as many Biotic and Abiotic Factors as you can from the image below.
6
A SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM is a system that survives, functions, and is renewed over time Organisms can live and flourish for many generations It can withstand pressure and support a variety of organisms ***WRITE THIS***
7
“Sustain” means: 1) to endure and 2) to support All organisms require sustainable ecosystems for survival ***WRITE THIS***
8
Example: Tree cutting can reduce an ecosystem’s sustainability (ability to endure or support other organisms) HOW? HOW COULD HUMANS HARVEST LUMBER SUSTAINABLY?
9
How do humans effect sustainability? We take more than we put back!
10
Example: EASTER ISLAND
11
Was this a sustainable ecosystem once humans began to develop it? How did human activity affect this ecosystem?
12
Now, Into Specifics... (some important terms)
13
THE EARTH’S SPHERES ***WRITE THIS***
14
Everything in an ecosystem is composed of matter.
15
At any time, matter can occupy one of the 4 spheres that make up the Earth
16
1) LITHOSPHERE The hard part of the earth’s surface (land) ***WRITE THIS***
17
2) HYDROSPHERE All the water found on earth (lakes, oceans, rain, ground water) ***WRITE THIS***
18
3) ATMOSPHERE The layer of gases above the earth’s surface (air) ***WRITE THIS***
19
4) THE BIOSPHERE Consists of the regions of earth where living organisms exist ***WRITE THIS***
