Lets control the map ● Railroad, mining, and ranching companies pressure government for land. ● Government pressures tribes. ● Sometimes use force: Ulysses S. Grant

The Crow Strategy: Cooperation ● Crow natives pressured from all sides. ● Turn to U.S. government for help, eventually, they lose land, too.

The Salish Strategy: Economic Independence ● Without wild game, Salish turn to farming. ● Non-Native populations crowd large Salish farms. ● President Grant’s executive order calls for a move. ● Drought forces Charlot’s hand.

Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Strategy: Armed Resistance ● Gold discovered on Sioux territory, protected by treaty. ● Government and Sioux prepare for war. ● The Battle of Little Big Horn, Custer and his destroyed.
