Confidential1 Hello, Natasha! This is Mrs. Bisanz. I will be your teacher today! OUR LESSON: Order of Operations

Confidential2 Let us do some warm up first Solve the following 586.20 + 79.05 = 665.25 888.8 - 34.78 = 854.02 23.4 * 79.01 = 1848.83 67.09 / 100 = 0.6709

Confidential3 Let us review what we did in the last lesson Decimals are numbers with a decimal point in it. The digits of the number to the left of the decimal point represent the whole number Digits on the right of the point are decimal fractions If there is no whole number, the decimal will begin with a zero in the units position. Digits after the decimal points are read individually.

Confidential4 What is a numerical expression ? A Numerical Expression is a combination of numbers and operations like multiply, divide, add, subtract etc Examples:4 + 3 * 5 2 + 6 ÷ 2 (10 * 8) - 7 Let’s get started !

Confidential5 When we want to solve more complex problems such as 14 ÷ (5 + 2) - 3 we must solve these in a certain order. This is called the “ Order of Operations”. Order of Operations

Confidential6 Look at both these problems 48 ÷ 6 x 2 = 8 x 2 = 16 48 ÷ 6 x 2 = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 Notice the difference in the way they are solved The one on the left is correct ?

Confidential7 The only difference is in the way the order of operations were done in these problems Let’s take another Example 6+ 2 * 5 = 6 +10 = 16 6 +2 * 5 = 8 *5 = 35 Both these problems have more than one operation so we need to do order them

Confidential8 The Order of Operations tells us which operation to perform first so that everyone gets the same final answer! Order of Operations

Confidential9 We can remember the Order of Operations as P E M D A S arentheses xponents ultiplication ivision ddition ubtraction "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" whichever comes first

Confidential10 The “P” and “E” The “P” stands for items in parentheses Do all items in the parentheses first The “E” stands for Exponents Do anything that has a exponent (power) 8282

Confidential11 The “MD” MD Represents Multiply and Divide Do which ever one of these comes first in the problem Work these two operations from left to right

Confidential12 The “AS” Represents Add and Subtract Do which ever one of these comes first Work left to right

Confidential13 Let us take an example again 6 +2 * 5 Now check PEMDAS to find out which operation has to be performed FIRST We see Multiply comes before Addition so we get 6 + 2 * 5 = 6 + 10 = 16

Confidential14 1) 5 + (12 – 3) 5 + 9 = 14 3) 39 ÷ (9 + 4) 39 ÷ 13 = 3 2) 36 ÷ (1 + 2) 2 36 ÷ 3 2 36 ÷ 9 = 4 Lets look at these examples

Confidential15 Now you try a few yourself Remember PEMDAS (5 – 1) 3 ÷ 4 4 3 ÷ 4 64 ÷ 4 16 14 + 3 (7 -2) – 2 x 5 14 + 3 x 5 - 2 x 5 14 + 15 - 2 x 5 14 + 15 – 10 29 – 10 19

Confidential16 BREAK TIME

Confidential17 Lets Play some Game, as its Game time Press HERE to start playing

Confidential18 An adult ticket to the zoo costs $5, a student ticket costs $3, and senior ticket costs $4. a.Write an expression to find the total cost of 2 adult,1 senior, and 3 student tickets. b. Evaluate the expression a.2 * 5 + 1 * 4 + 3 * 3 b.= $23

Confidential19 Compare the following: 4 + (2 + 12) 4 * (2 + 12) 4 + (2 * 12) (4 * 2)* 12 In which expression(s) will the value change if the parentheses is dropped? 4* (2 + 12)

Confidential20 Wallpaper for a bedroom costs $16 per roll for the walls and $9 for the border. If the room requires 12 rolls of paper for the walls and 6 rolls for the border, Compute the total cost for the wallpaper and the border. $246

Confidential21 When we want to solve more complex problems such as 34 ÷ (7- 5) + 3 We do so in a certain order. This is called the ‘Order of operations’ Lets review what we have Learned in the last lesson The Order of Operations tells us which operation to perform first so that everyone gets the same answer!

Confidential22 We can remember The Order of Operations as PEMDAS or Review ‘ Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally ’

Confidential23 P – Parentheses E- Exponents M- Multiplication D – Division A – Addition S- Subtraction PEMDAS Do whichever one of these comes first in the problem. Work from left to right. Do whichever one of these comes first in the problem. Work from left to right.

Confidential24 Let see some Examples 156 - 6 * 0 = 156 80 ÷ 10 * 8 = 64 14 - 2 * 7 + 0 = 0

Confidential25 You had a Great Lesson Today! Be sure to practice what you have learned
