4 Impact on Access: In Fall 2015, 82% of our students tested into developmental English. Disproportionate impact: 23% of white non- Hispanic students tested into English 1, while only 11% of African American students did the same. Based on their Accuplacer scores, 56% of these incoming students will be eligible for English 1 + 348D in Fall 2016. 55% of African American Students and 58% of white non-Hispanic students will be eligible.

5 Potential for Success Students in our 1-below basic skills class (English 370) have a 43% chance of successfully completing English 1 within two years. Pass rates in English 1 currently average around 70%. In a study John Hetts presented of 4 colleges which instituted the co-req model, success rates ranged from 62-78% With the added level of support, we have reason to believe that our English 1/348D students should see pass rates far in excess of 43%.

6 English 1/348D: Freshman English + co-req Four unit English class (beginning in Fall ‘16) One unit lab co-req (3 hours a week) Same instructor for lab and class 30 students co-enrolled in both sections (learning community) Open to students with a 70-89 score on the Accuplacer sentence skills test OR a High School GPA of 2.3 Or a “C” in Junior or Senior HS English Just-in-time remediation Regular English 1 level assignments Increased Scaffolding in Reading and Writing Lab Tech in the lab, assisting the instructor

7 The California Acceleration Project CAP supports colleges to increase student completion of transfer- level English and math through evidence-based practices that reduce or eliminate students’ time in remediation. High-Leverage Practices: Transforming placement policies to broaden access to transfer-level courses and enable all students to begin higher in the sequence Contextualizing math remediation to students’ program of study -- algebra for math-intensive pathways, statistics & quantitative reasoning for others Redesigning curricula to accelerate students through remediation, including co-requisite models at the transfer-level and single-semester remedial courses aligned with the transfer-level courses in students’ program of study http://cap.3csn.org
