2 Global Migration Migration- The movement of people from one place to another. This can be movement within a country as well as movement across national boundaries. Migrant- person who moves from one country or area to another

3 Types of Migrants Refugees- Migrants living outside their country of origin who are unwilling or unable to return Asylum Seekers- Refugees attempting to obtain permanent residence in the country to which they fled Displaced Person- One who had fled his or her home but has not left the home country Immigrant- One who travels to a foreign country, often to become a permanent resident

4 Types of Migration Regional- Movement of people within a specialized area Example: People in South US moving North to find employment Seasonal- Movement of people based on seasonal demand for labor Example: Agricultural Industry Transit- Movement of people to one country on their way to another Example: Many countries use Mexico as a transit point to for illegal entry to the U.S. Forced and Induced- Involuntary movement due to government initiative Example: Africans removed from their homeland and enslaved in America. Return Migration- Movement of people back to the country from which they originally emigrated. Example- Many immigrants return to their country of origin after they have earned and saved enough money to return home and start a business or build homes etc.

5 Causes of Migration Push Factors- Negative developments leading many people to leave their homes Examples” Violation of human rights, political oppression, forced resettlement, political instability, rapid population growth, high rates of unemployment, poverty, environmental disasters etc.

6 Causes of Migration Pull Factors- Positive developments inducing people to move from their homes Examples: Higher wages, political and cultural freedom and stability, comparatively healthier environment, educational and cultural opportunities, family reunification, etc.
