Great Depression Hits GA Farmers early Georgia cotton farmers did well during WWI (1914- 1918)—Demand for cotton went up and so did prices (farmers could sell for higher price). Then, when war ended, demand dropped so prices dropped dramatically The “evil” Boll Weevil—cotton plant eating bug destroyed many cotton fields in the 1910s and 1920s. Drought (lack of rain)—one of the worst of the 20 th century. 1925 RESULT: Georgians lose 60,000 farms; farmers scarcely notice Great Depression—they were already in their own “Great Depression”.
