Visual Data, Day 1 Taxonomy, Characters and Classification

Journal 0 (from Friday) Good: Using info (title, axis) to help you Making some good guesses for W To Improve: Definitions (what is a biome?) More detail!! More informed guesses! Complete sentences next time please?

How did you group different shells together?

All of life originated from a single ancestor

Phylogenetic Tree Phylogenetic Tree: visual depiction of evolutionary relationships to a common ancestor. Which animal is more closely related to animal D? C or B?

We organize life into eight different levels. Each group contains the next: hierarchical organization. Eukaryotes Animalia Chordata (Craniata) Mammalia Primates Hominidae Homo sapiens

Systems of organization help humans find patterns in complexity. How do we organize our homes? Our communities?

We group life based on homologous characters Homology: a trait or phenotype (physical, behavioral, or genetic) shared between different groups due to common ancestry. How do scientists group life on earth?

How do you know a character is homologous? Found only in certain groups of closely related organisms (i.e. fur in mammals, backbone in vertebrates, nucleus in eukaryotes). You can mark such characters on phylogenetic trees to unify groups together. Homology: One Evolutionary ChangeAnalogy: Two separate evolutionary changes

What kinds of characters can be homologous? Morphology: How the plant or animal looks, color, shape, texture, length, weight (Fossils are generally classified using these characters) Behavioral: Eating habits, appearance of first flower on a plant, web location in spiders Genetic: DNA “barcodes”

How might you group the shells differently now? What other information do you want?
