DEFINITION Learning Management System (or LMS) is a broad term used to describe software tools designed to manage user learning interventions and provide access to online learning services for students, teacher, and administrator. A software system, that allows the development and delivery of educational courses using the Internet as a delivery system.

HISTORY In the early ’90s some Luther Seminary (St. Paul) faculty members were struggling to retain students who didn’t have the funds or, because of family obligations, couldn’t relocate to attend seminary. Tom Walker knew there had to be some kind of tool that would enable people to communicate with each other without being in the same place at the same time. Learning management systems (LMS) also sometimes known as Course management systems (CMS) have come a long way since those early days.

Disadvantages of Open Source LMS (Moodle) Lack of easy to obtain support --Forum has a great deal of information but it can be difficult to find –nearly all Forum information is in English Requires that someone on your staff takes responsibilityfor making it work; you can’t just telephone Moodletechnical support More instructor effort required; teaching staff may not be able to cope with new technology Great idea but just too much trouble –no time, no money and little or no support

Open Source LMS (Moodle) - Using Server Technologies A Moodle developer should be able to install a local server for testing their code on their operating system of choice. XAMPP is a good choice currently for Windows. Being able to use the Linux shell can be useful if you need to administer a Moodle server and understanding Apache is useful.

Benefits & Drawbacks of Moodle Benefits It’s open source great community customizable widely available sell content online it’s familiar it has loads of content available Drawbacks: reporting is difficult user management takes a little tech savvy-ness closed (it’s not open for all users)

Conclusion In this study, open source LMSs were analyzed and it was observed that Moodle LMS among other LMSs, include many features that improve pedagogical quality and many needed tools that an e-learning system should have.
