The plants were given the name Passion Flower or Passion vine because to represent aspects of the Christian Crucifixion story, which sometimes was referred to as the passion. The ten petal like parts represent Jesus’ disciples not including Peter and Judas. The five stamens represent the five wounds Jesus received The knob- like sigmas represent the nails The fringe of the plant represents the crown of thorns Another name is the maypop. This comes from the hollow, yellow fruits that pop loudly when crushed

It is the hardiest of the Passion Flowers This is an unusual flower It is widely distributed in the southeast, especially from Florida to Texas Herbaceous vine- up to 25 feet long Sprawls along the ground

Woody in warm winter climates Harbaceous (dies to the ground) in cold winter climates May not survive extremely cold climates

Intricate 3 inches, lavender flower are short stalked from leaf axils Petals and sepals subtend a fringe of wavy or crimped, hair like segments Pistil and stamens are also showy 3- lobed, deciduous leaves are dark-green above and whitish below The fruit- maypops- appear in July and mature to a yellowish color in fall
