Thesis The utilization of land for human benefit has been around since the creation of man, however with modern and over development of land in Hawaii it has created negative impacts for the locals, Native Hawaiian Community, and environment further affecting our generation and generations to come.
3
Overview How does land development affect locals? How does land development affect the Native Hawaiian Community? How does it affect the environment? Why is this important to our generation? What is the best way to stop the overdevelopment of land in Hawaii?
4
Introduction Importance and relation to our generation – Cultural preservation becoming large movement – For residents in Hawaii it will effect the quality and living standards for the future. – We need to protect environment for the future
5
Effects on Locals Problems – High cost of living kicks locals out – Population increase leads to increase in traffic – Ex. Kaka’ako development Differing argument – Development of land is necessary for Hawaii’s economy Kaka’ako development of luxury condos
6
Effects on Native Hawaiians Problem – Desecration of native burial sites ex. Wal-Mart built over burial site on Ke’eaumoku Street – Disrespect for native culture and sacred land ex. A’ole TMT (construction of Telescope on Mauna Kea) Differing argument – All Native land is “Sacred Land” making it hard to develop anywhere. Image taken from A’ole TMT movement
7
Effects on environment Problem – Destruction of natural resources and habitats Ex. Destruction of anchialine ponds – Pollution Ex. Bulldozers used in construction causing sediment runoff Differing Argument – Population is increasing so it is necessary to expand Sediment runoff in Maui
8
Possible Solutions Become involved/raise awareness – Sign petitions, become part of movement groups Strengthen legal rights for protection groups – Ex State Hawaiian Preservation Society, Aloha Aina
