What is a Paralympian? An athlete that has a physical disability, e.g. amputation, spinal cord injury, visual impairment or cerebral palsy. Popular Paralympic sports include Athletics, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, and Ice Sledge Hockey. 28/06/2016 Video

What’s it like being a Paralympian? You will investigate the following: 1.Does being confined to a wheelchair affect the distance you can throw? 2.Does being partially sighted (with monocular vision) affect the accuracy of your throw? 28/06/2016

How will we simulate these physical disabilities? 1.Being wheelchair bound 2.Having monocular vision 28/06/2016

What’s it like being a Paralypian? You will be working in pairs. Collect a worksheet for the two investigations. Write a predication and draw a results table for each. Write down how you will make each investigation a fair test. 28/06/2016

Investigation 1 Conclusion Being confined to a wheelchair _________ the distance I can throw. This is because… When sitting down, you can only use the muscles in your arm, shoulder and torso to provide the push force on the bean bag. When standing, you can bend your knees, allowing you to add to the push force with your leg muscles, and use more of your upper body muscles by twisting further. The more force provided to the bean bag, the further it will travel. 28/06/2016 decreases

Investigation 2 Conclusion Having monocular vision _________ the accuracy of my throw. This is because… When you look through one eye you have a restricted field of view (to only the right or left side). This makes it difficult to judge depth. When both eyes are open, your right and left fields of view overlap, allowing you to accurately judge distance. 28/06/2016 decreases
