1 An Acoustic Analysis of the Distinctiveness between /e/ and /æ/ in Korean – Focusing on Gospel Readings Oh, C. R. 1 ; Youm, C. H. 2 ; Kwon, S. B. 1 1 Pusan National University, 2 Busan Catholic University Result 4 : Concerning the audience’s capacity, 1.the audience could not distinguish the two vowels in a deliberately designed word that has no meaning and is included in a sentence. However, when they heard the two vowels in context, seventy out of twenty students (85%) could distinguish the difference, even in the case of priests who could not distinctly pronounce them. 2.Interestingly, nineteen students (95%) distinguished the two vowels exactly in unknown but meaningful sentences. This was because the audience already knew the biblical texts. Results and Discussions 1.Park, J. Y. Selected References 3 priests and 20 audiences 1.Let three priests read three kinds of sentences on comfortable pitch. 1)An unknown sentence including meaningless words with the two vowels /e/ and /æ/ 2)Two unknown sentences including meaningful words with the two vowels 3)Three well-known biblical sentence including the two vowels 2.All two vowels that the three priests pronounced are recorded by Praat with CAMAC CMK-525MV Headset Microphone. 3. Analyze the 1, 2 formants and the vowels’ length by Praat. 4.Let audiences dictate the recorded sentences. 5.Concerning the audience’s ability to listen distinctively, this study surveyed twenty audiences through a questionnaire. Subjects and Methods 1./e/ is pronounced in a more forward and higher position than /æ/. 2.The vowel length of /e/ is longer than /æ/. 3.The audiences can distinguish the two vowels that subjects pronounced, if they are included in context whether known or unknown. This means that you can make a deliberate attempt to pronounce distinctively the two vowels in a specific circumstances, for example in a gospel reading. 4.The research proposes that those who intend to proclaim the gospel should practice the distinctive pronunciation of /e/ and /æ/ and suggests that those who plan to go to Mass read and familiarize themselves in advance with the gospel of the day. Conclusions Introduction 1.To identify whether or not a priest can distinctively pronounce /e/ and /æ/ in proclaiming the gospel reading. 2.To confirm how they can distinctively pronounce these two vowels. 3.To research whether or not their audience can distinctively hear the difference as well as how they can distinctively hear the two vowels. 1.Koreans could not make distinction between /e/ and /æ/ clearly. 2.It is necessary to distinguish the two vowels while reading catholic gospels, though. Result 3 : Although it is useless to get the averages of F1, F2 and the vowel lengths, in each case /e/ is pronounced in a more forward and higher position than /æ/ as well as longer than /æ/ due to deliberate attempts on the part of subjects to distinguish the two vowels. Result 2 : Two of three subjects pronounced /e/ longer than /æ/, while another subject pronounced /e/ in the almost same length as /æ/. Result 5 : Concerning the question about how to distinguish the two vowels, they answered that it was because of the difference of the vowel’s length as well as its context. Result 1 : Two of three subjects pronounced /e/ more forward and higher position than /æ/.
