Using Turnitin

You will have been asked to submit a Turnitin submission through Moodle, the output is an originality report. This will show how much of your work has been seen on various sources ( websites, journals, previous student work etc). This will help you with your references as the report will give you a link to the origin of the text. You will be asked to printout the Originality Report with your work. You start by clicking on the Turnitin submission link in Moodle, you need to submit a paper to upload to the website.

Fill in your details, your name should be filled in automatically so you may only have to fill in a title and then browse to where the document is (USB pendrive, Desktop etc).

Click on Add Submission and wait for a while for the results, be patient. If you wait more than 4 hours or so there may be a problem. It is important that you do not leave this to the last minute to avoid problems. You can ask for some help if his time has elapsed and we may be able to sort this out. After you’ve had a well earned break, go back to the Turnitin area and look at your results. The result will show a percentage. This will range from 0% to 100% and also coloured Green to Yellow to Red. Just like traffic lights red is a not good, yellow is a warning and green is OK. We will look at the results on the following pages.

This example shows a 48% result, that means that 48% has been seen elsewhere. This is not a good result as close to half of this is other people’s work. There is a list on the right-hand side showing the number of sources found, each of these sources shows the origin of the selected text. If you have you inserted your references in the document, Turnitin may pick these up and add them to your percentage. You can omit these by clicking on the icon above (it’s meant to look like a funnel, I think !) to filter these results out. Try it and see if it makes a difference.

Once you have looked at your report you will either: 1)Realise that you need to make changes or add references, you will need to re-edit the document and pay attention to the results that Turnitin highlighted. 2)Be happy with the result and references, you will need to print put the Originality Report percentage page. To print out the report click on the Printer icon (it’s very small so you can miss it), it allows you to save the report or view it, I always save it to my Desktop and you can view it or print the Originality Page at your leisure.

Below is an example of an Originality Report percentage page, this is what you will need to hand in with your work. Remember that if you change your original work, you will need a new Originality Report.
