13.1 WELCOME TO COMMON CORE HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL YEAR 2015-2016 SESSION 13 23 MARCH 2016 SECANT YE SHALL FIND
2
13.2 TODAY’S AGENDA Eureka Math G10 M5 L14 & 15: Secant Lines & Secant Angle Theorem Big ideas discussion Break Modeling Mentoring Conversations It’s TIME: Assessment discussion, reflections on curriculum tools Scaling Up: Small group and reporting out Homework and closing remarks
3
13.3 ACTIVITY 1 SECANT LINES & SECANT ANGLE THEOREM EUREKA MATH TM GRADE 10 MODULE 5 LESSONS 14 AND 15 As you engage, consider: what aspects of Big Ideas 2 and 4 do you notice in the lesson? Record tangible examples to share at the lesson’s conclusion.
4
13.4 ACTIVITY 2 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION FROM NCTM ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS FOR GEOMETRY GRADES 9-12
5
13.5 ACTIVITY 3 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION Reflect on your own about how the focus on Big Ideas 2 and 4 allowed you to make connections between this lesson and other Geometry concepts. Add some notes to the Big Ideas packet from last time regarding tonight’s lesson.
6
13.6 ACTIVITY 2 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION Big Idea 2: Geometry is about working with variance and invariance, despite appearing to be about theorems. 2a. Underlying any geometric theorem is an invariance-something that does not change while something else does. 2c. Examining the possible variations of an invariant situation can lead to new conjectures and theorems. Big Idea 4: A written proof is the endpoint of the process of proving. 4c. Behind every proof is a proof idea.
7
13.7 ACTIVITY 2 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION Next Time Bring your Big Ideas packet and we will revisit and revise (or completely regenerate) our concept map on circles from Class 9.

13.9 ACTIVITY 3 MODELING MENTORING CONVERSATIONS
10
13.10 ACTIVITY 3 MODELING MENTORING CONVERSATIONS Five phases of an instructional conference: Launching Reflecting Reinforcing Refining Reflecting Some things to consider as you plan your conference: Select one person to conduct the conference tonight As the teacher talks, press for evidence about what did or did not go well Continue to move towards more interactive conversations Feedback group A: Schmeling, Pedrick, Hoffman, Rekowski, Rozga, Hongermeier, Garrity Feedback group B: Neuworth, Kroll, Sagrillo, Moss, Wells, Gerlach, Nagaweicki
11
13.11 ACTIVITY 4 IT’S TIME RETURNING TO OUR CURRICULUM EVALUATION TOOLS
12
13.12 ACTIVITY 4 CURRICULUM EVALUATION TOOLS Complete the Curriculum Evaluation Reflection sheet on your own. After you have written your responses, share them with colleagues from your district (if you have some here) or singleton leaders from other districts.
13
13.13 ACTIVITY 4 CONNECTING TO ASSESSMENT Briefly discuss your responses to the assessment writing for your homework (from Class 11) as a follow up to the curriculum discussion. How might we think about overcoming assessment challenges over time? How might we provide administrators, students, and parents with positive messages about the role of assessment?
14
13.14 ACTIVITY 5 SCALING UP SHARING UPDATES
15
13.15 ACTIVITY 5 SCALING UP Making this conversation a safe space for all: What we say in this room remains in this room (unless someone gives specific permission otherwise) Avoid names/use pseudonyms when possible Use noticing and wondering language so that we avoid value judgments Keep a positive presupposition in mind as you discuss Be cognizant that our math education world is small
16
13.16 ACTIVITY 5 SCALING UP Using the first part of your Scaling Up recording sheet, discuss in small groups what you did over the past two weeks to set the stage for your Scaling Up conversation. Choose one story from the small group to share out. The person who told the story may share out, or Another person in the group may share out on their behalf.
17
13.17 Format of Leadership Panel Discussions (15 minutes each) Slide summarizing each project & outcomes What was successful about your overarching theme? What was challenging across the projects? What aspect of a colleague’s project is interesting or useful to you going forward? Groups and topics: Hoffman, Hongsermeier, and Moss: Supporting teacher growth Sagrillo, Garrity, and Neuworth: Developing student teachers and alt-cert teachers Pedrick, Kroll, Wells, and Gerlach: Curriculum development Rekowski, Rozga, and Schmeling: Changing teaching, learning, and assessment ACTIVITY 6 HOMEWORK AND CLOSING REMARKS
18
13.18 Read It’s TIME, pp. 44-58 and come prepared for a brief discussion Have your conversation related to the Scaling Up initiative, and come with a completed form to turn in. Bring your leadership project to completion (or as close as you can) and be prepared to share in the panel discussions Send Mike information for your slide in advance (email is fine) ACTIVITY 6 HOMEWORK AND CLOSING REMARKS
