1 APP in Science – developing formative assessment in Science Pilot project: QCA, Cheshire and Cornwall LAs

2 Aim To develop a set of materials and strategies to support teachers in assessing the progress made by students – following the work done in English & Maths

3 Why? Effective teacher assessment makes it easier to give effective feedback Effective teacher assessment informs future teaching Effective teacher assessment may eventually replace SATs

4 Experience in schools Using the materials is a developmental process Assessment is done using a new approach – using strands of enquiry and knowledge & understanding Having well phrased criteria is essential Teachers quickly learned what kinds of learning activities also make good assessment activities

5 Key message for LAs It is essential for quality materials to be animated in schools for teachers to become more competent and confident
