Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org The Challenge Can we rebuild that connection and put housing centre stage again? Does Housing understand health sector priorities? The NHS needs to make £20 billion of efficiency savings Integration with social care Role of Public Health Are we able to clearly set out how housing can contribute? What do you need to know about Housing?

Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org Do health & social care get housing? In theory - but not so much in practice – why? Pressure to manage crisis & acute needs Planning & commissioning decisions often reverting to reactive short term solutions Funding short term Good relationships forged at a very local level Rhetoric often fails at point of delivery 10

Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org Joseph Rowntree Housing, health and social care agencies are not effectively collaborating to provide services for vulnerable people There is little evidence of three-way links between all the agencies. Links between social services and health are reasonably good, but both tend to exclude housing. 13

Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org Where will we live? Staying well at home, & recovering and receiving treatment at home, is a priority Complex issue of supply and demand that needs to address location, tenure, security and affordability. Welfare reform will impact on access to housing but it is not just an issue of the “bedroom tax” Ageing population will need different housing models that provide choices, and link to support and care. 14
15
Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org Economic sense We know that the economic rewards of investment in housing are enormous. Every £1 spent puts £3 back into the wider economy. Because every new home built creates jobs it protects jobs and gets people back into work. Maintenance & adaptations sustain & create jobs 90% building materials are manufactured in UK 15

Learn with us. Improve with us. Influence with us | www.cih.org But housing offers so much more…………….. A decent home is a fundamental building block to a healthy, independent and dignified life, providing the secure base people need to achieve their aspirations. “the right to housing should not be interpreted in a narrow or restricted sense which equates it with, for example, the shelter provided by merely having a roof over one’s head or views shelter exclusively as a commodity. Rather it should be seen as the right to live somewhere in security, peace and dignity.” V. Annex 1, General Comment No. 4 on the right to adequate housing (Article 11, § 1), § 7, adopted 13 December 1991. Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the principal U.N. body responsible for housing 16
