MAGNET TEST INFRASTRUCTURE: CRYOSTATS AND BENCHES 10 operational horizontal benches – D cluster allows different lengths – A cluster allows high ramp rates LN 2 tank Cryostat borrowed from RF Magnet Flushing Station recuperated from LHC Main Magnet series tests activity Transfer lines recuperate d from CRG Control Room Temporary placed in the parking area 2 operational vertical cryostats – Long cryostat with 1 insert x magnet – Diode and HTs lead cryostat with 3 inserts – feed box ( SC link HFM cryostat 20 kA power converter Control Room Valve box DAQ Cold buffer Cryogenic Control Cryogenic rack 10 kA power converter Pumping line 20 kA water cooled cables Horizontal test benches Vertical test cryostats Magnet test @ LN 2

Of power supply of 600 A and a space of 60 m aligned to the feed box New power supply of 30 kA with energy extraction system and new cryostat and cooling concept New power supply of 30 kA and energy extraction, quench protection system on the horizontal benches Space, for the STRING: power supplys + magnets and the link with DFB and the EE system… Testing in the SM18 Present set up with priorities EVOLUTION NEED OF THE SET UP Projects needing cold powering test HFM cryostat and cooling system, 20 kA CL Series HL LHC QXF in horizontal ( 25 kA) 10 or 20 tests till 2021 2019 Sc link 20m 600 A in series powered by the feed box and 2 kA PC Sc link STRING configuration with 3x 20 kA,9 x 120 A, 6 x 300 A circuit

WHY DIODE cryostat for INDIVIDUAL TEST OF HTS Insert? Dimension ok Powering up to 10 kA ok Daq x 200 channels ok Energy extraction ( swith and dump) ok Variable temperature should be ok (external mixture of gas and control of gas temperature) Timing: 2015 ok Issues or to be studied: Connection to the leads at variable temperature Cooling conditions and homogeneity Protection and instrumentation ( V taps, pick up coils, temp sensor, hall probes) Low inductance ( PC control)

10 kA circuit 20 kA circuit WHY HFM for the TEST OF HTS Insert in High Field (FReSca2)? 1 operational power converter 20 kA/24 V for the vertical cryostats – Long cryostat – Diode and lead cryostat 1 operational power converter 10 kA/ 12V – Feed box ……..operation today up to 2 kA PC Dimension ok Powering of two individual circuits ok Daq x 200 channels ok Energy extraction of two individual circuits ok HFM cryostat DIODE cryostat Issues or to be studied: Connection to the leads Timing : not before Sept 2016 Low inductance ( PC control)

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION WITH D1 @CERN? x EUCARD @ Testing in HF long Useful length (mm) 3800 Useful diameter (mm) 600 Main Volume (l) 8100 Working temp (K) 1.9 - 4.2 Max weight (t) 6 Nr of current leads 2 x 12 kA 1 X 6 kA LONG Cryostat x HF ( D1) background test of HTS magnet: Dimension ok Daq x 200 channels ok Variable temperature should be ok ( we did alredy) Timing: 2015 but to be prioritised ??? Issues or to be studied: Powering of two individual circuits ( we have 3 leads.. maybe 4 th is possible) Connection to the leads Energy extraction of two individual circuits !!!! Is not possible in 2016… Low inductance ( PC control)
