Afferent impulses (blue) travel to the spinal cord, where synapses occur with motor neurons and interneurons. 3b The interneurons (green) make inhibitory synapses with ventral horn neurons (purple) that prevent the antagonist muscles (hamstrings) from resisting the contraction of the quadriceps.
