Initiated by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India 17 Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Parks (STEPs) & 18 Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) promoted so far. Adding 5 every year. An equal number promoted by other public & private institutions. A good partnership between academia, industry & research. For promotion of Knowledge Based, Technology Driven (KBTD) enterprises. The Existing Framework of Business Incubation in India

Reputed institutions like IITs, IIMs, NITs, NID, ICRISAT have started the initiative. Technology areas include IT, BT, design, new materials, composites, engineering, food technology etc. Initiative on Nano Science & Technology Incubator being taken up. Growing interest of international community and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to work with Indian incubation programme.

INITIATIVES & PLANS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Exposure & networking with global incubators & experts Sharing & learning of global good practices. Facilitation of information exchange specially through ICT. Setting up of the Incubation Support Fund based on the recommendations made at the Global Forum. For the policy level support system efforts are being made e.g. provision of discounted industrial sheds, low cost connectivity etc. Multi institutional support now available to Incubators. This is the beginning but we have a long way to go.

Issues Need To Be Addressed: Development of good incubation managers capable to handling KBTD enterprises. Early stage funding on the lines of SBIR and SBTT support. Networking & globalisation. Economic Trust Building across borders. Policy level support framework for the Incubatees. Philanthropic Technologies to be brought in Public Domain for Poverty Reduction & Environmental Protection. Drinking Water, Energy Efficient Technologies.
