I. I Like Ike *-Korean War ends Truman’s popularity- *does Not run in 1952 1. 1952 election won by Dwight “I like Ike” Eisenhower -Nixon is V.P. –accused of profiting from a secret slush fund “Checkers Speech” 2. -Middle or Straight Road policies Ike pursues policies between Laissez- faire and New Deal activism -Conservative when it comes to money, liberal when it comes to humans

*Korean War -Korean War had destroyed Truman’s popularity -Eisenhower pledged an end to the war -War ends in a cease fire at the original 38 th parallel- 1953

Communist Fears *-McCarthyism Ike never directly challenged his claims -Spy cases kept issue before the public 1. development of a hydrogen bomb that is much more powerful 67x more * scientists opposed the new weapon but it proceeded -1952 1 st H-bomb is tested -1953 USSR tests their own H- bomb 1 yr later

III. Brink of War 1. John Foster Dulles was Sec. Of State -containment of communism based on threat of war -massive retaliation using nuclear weapons -reduced size of regular forces and buildup of nuclear arsenal- ->2. Brinkmanship: building up weapons -Began the famous arms race between the US & SU

Brink of War 3. citizens build backyard bomb shelters and practice air raid drills for the next 30yrs -”Duck and Cover”

Cold War Spreads -newly developed CIA = Very important -covert actions in Iran and Guatemala (operations to overthrow their unfriendly weak Gov’t, *1 reason is because we wanted their oil) *US Replaces France in S.Vietnam -1953, Joseph Stalin died and tensions seemed to relax Nikita Khrushchev : New SU leader, *believes a peaceful Triumph of Communism will occur -Soviet suppression of Hungarian Revolt, 1954- Hungry Wanted to be democratic, SU rushes into country & crushes revolt, killing 30,000 -

Cold War Spreads ---- -Warsaw Pact formed in 1955 -******Eisenhower Doctrine-*******- stated again that the U.S. should try to defend any nation against communism.ESP in the Middle East!

V. Space Race -1957, USSR develops ICBM : Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile. = new threat of long range nuclear attack -Oct. 1957, USSR launches Sputnik confirms development of ICBMs -great embarrassment to the U.S. creation of NASA to catch up National Aeronautics and Space Administration -U.S. launches satellite in early 1958 -Race to Space and the Moon had begun !!!!

U-2 - U.S. intelligence begins spy missions over USSR (Take pics of troop movement & missiles) -U-2 Spy plane was supposedly undetectable bc it was so high in the atmosphere. -Soviet Summit scheduled btw SU & US to talk about Arms race-, G. Powers takes 1 more spy flight over SU before meeting -May, 1960 Gary Francis Powers was shot down in his U-2 plane over Russia -Cold War escalates as Powers is free, & we do NOT apologize for spying

American Dream -dream of a successful life -growth of big business (*more white collared workers & stay at home moms) conglomerates: major corporation that includes a smaller # of companies in unrelated industries) franchising -conformity: loss in individuality individuality disappears in corporate life

Consumerism *W/more $ to spend, making 2xs as much…… -buying of material goods, which came to be equated w/success -new products polyester, Teflon, electronics, *washing machines, dryers, blenders, freezers, TVs, Record Players -credit cards: Am Express 1958 -advertising influence “Age”
