2 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 Aims of today T o gain an overview & appreciation of the outcomes and benefits of the PMI 2 Employability projects To hear more from those directly involved in delivering the projects & developing the resources To share good practice and learn from others in order to improve services for international students To develop a lasting web-based virtual event and resource for others unable to participate today. 3 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS PMI 2 Employability Projects From 2007 to 2011, AGCAS has been working on a series of PMI 2 funded employability projects in partnership with HECSU / GP and NASES providing valuable support for international students and for HE careers & employability staff across the UK. Over the four years of funding, the total budget allocation for employ-ability projects, including those run by CIHE and i-Graduate as well as the partners named above, came to over £500,00. This presentation provides a brief description of the various projects, achievements and benefits to AGCAS services and members.

4 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS Virtual Learning Environment – Internationalisation module AGCAS staff and members helped develop a Virtual Learning Environment, resources and tools to help those advising international students to gain a better understanding of the issues involved and useful ways of working.

5 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS Training for HE Careers & Employment Staff AGCAS held many well attended and positively received training events and conference sessions over recent years to help those staff advising international students to do so more effectively. Events have covered: Permission to Work, information on the international visits and projects AGCAS has undertaken, tailored information and guidance for international students and opportunities to share good practice. A virtual version of today’s event will be available on the AGCAS website.

6 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS & NASES Visits to China & India HE careers & employability experts from AGCAS & NASES undertook study visits to meet employers, government organisations, alumni and university representatives. These visits provided very valuable insights into the views of these different stakeholders about the perceived value and expectations of a UK higher education. Two substantial reports were produced, with recommendations for UK governments, HE institutions, careers services and students and graduates themselves.

9 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS PMI 2 Events for Employers AGCAS held two high profile events for employers helping them to understand the complex issues around UK immigration and employment legislation and the benefits of employing international graduates. The first event was held in March 2010 and the second in March 2011. These events also provided excellent opportunities for employers and HE careers professional to meet each other and to hear from immigration experts.

10 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS PMI 2 Pilot Projects Over 2009-10 and 2010-11 AGCAS services conducted 10 pilot projects aimed at developing international alumni networks, workplace contacts, awareness of the labor market in different PMI 2 target countries and case-studies demonstrating successful employment. Today you will hear about projects run by Brunel & Oxford Brookes, Cardiff, UWE and York Universities and the Careers Group, University of London and reports on these will be on the AGCAS website after the end of March.

12 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 AGCAS Virtual International Careers Fairs Three virtual fairs were held during 2010-11 by a range of types of institutions and areas of the country. All were open to international students from anywhere in the UK. a)October 2010, University of Glasgow - 1679 registrants from 84 institutions & 94 companies from 6 countries – China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan & Vietnam. b)January 2011, University of Exeter - focused on the Pacific- Rim, 2000+ registrants, 36 employers from 15 countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.

14 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 HECSU / AGCAS / NASES Employer Database Project The Employer Student Database, developed jointly by Graduate Prospects / HECSU and the Careers Group, University of London, was launched on 7 th March and will provide enhanced services for international students and graduates. The project aims to provide resources and contacts to help international students who want to work in the UK or in countries other than the UK or to return to work in their country of origin. 17 © AGCAS PMI 2 Dissemination Event 16 March 2011 PMI 2 Employability Projects - lessons International students, their parents and sponsors expect a great deal from the UK higher education experience Good work experience is seen as a vital element Overseas employers expect high level English language Careers & employability services play a key role in meeting the expectations of international students The International Student Barometer shows levels of satisfaction with careers & employment support have risen during the period of these projects
