1
A verb is a ‘doing’ word...
2
Spot the verb...! I eat a green apple You play football We buy some expensive clothes They travel on a large plane She studies for her exams
3
Examples of verbs in ENGLISH Who can give me some examples of verbs in English? Lets go through some together on the board...
4
Look at all the different endings... The French make things a lot easier! ALL French verbs end in either: -IR -RE -ER Lets take the examples on the board...
5
The ‘infinitive’... The infinitive is the verb as it is found in the dictionary before we do anything to it... E.g. To play, to buy, to study, to eat, to go out, to think, to sing... When a verb has its –ER –IR –RE ending, it is in the infinitive
6
Using your dictionaries... Put the date and the title ‘verbs’ in to your vocab books, and write down the following words: To play To sing To study To buy Now find the French translations, use a pencil! Hint: Verbs in the dictionary have ‘vf’ before them!
7
The first thing we need to know Who is doing the action? In English... Je Tu Il Elle On Nous Vous Ils Elles I You He She ‘One’ We You They They

How verb endings change We also change the verb endings in English, lets look at the verb ‘to play’ I play You play He plays She plays We play They play
9
Lets look at an –er verb Who can tell me what the French verb is for ‘to play’? ‘jouer’ = ‘to play’ Just as in English, the end of the verb changes, depending on who is doing it! The first thing we do to the –er verb, is remove the- -er ending... So ‘jouer’ becomes...??? ‘jou’
10
Now lets decide who is doing it... Je‘jou’+-e=‘joue’ Tu‘jou’+-es=‘joues’ Il‘jou’+-e=‘joue’ Elle‘jou’+-e=‘joue’ On‘jou’+-e=‘joue’ Nous‘jou’+-ons=‘jouons’ Vous‘jou’+-ez=‘jouez’ Ils‘jou’+-ent=‘jouent’ Elles‘jou’+-ent=‘jouent’
11
Write the following down: For an –er verb, the first thing we do is remove the –er Then we add the correct endings depending on who is doing it: Je-e Tu-es Il/Elle/On-e Elle-e Nous-ons Vous-ez Ils/Elles-ent
12
Lets try one together: What is the French for ‘to sing’? = ‘chanter’ What do we need to do to it? Remove the ‘–er’ = ‘chant’ Now lets go through the PARADIGM
13
Worksheet Complete the worksheet in pencil – we will go through the answers together – you have 10 minutes Hint: Remember we are looking for ‘er’ verbs! If you need help, put your hand up!
