Find topic Read background guide Go to your country’s UN Mission page ◦ 1) Country’s general foreign policy ◦ 2) Any formal documents stating country’s opinion on issues relating to topic ◦ 3) Statements regarding your topic made by representatives of your country Google searches ◦ Government sites ◦ News media sites

Research surrounding countries and the region ◦ Many countries in the same region may have similar views

Country’s foreign policy Country’s previous actions regarding issue ◦ Includes various treaties or resolutions signed by your country Allies and adversaries Proposals and limits of negotiations ◦ Ideas on how to solve topic ◦ How far is your country willing to go? Bottom line ◦ What does your country want to see happen

First Page: Committee Name, Country’s Name, Your Name, Your School’s Name, and Big Picture of Country’s Flag ◦ All centered ◦ Use normal-size font Second Page (Double Spaced ◦ Header: Same as first page but right aligned ◦ First Paragraph: How the topic affects your country and why it is important ◦ Second Paragraph: Your country’s position on the topic

Third Paragraph: Past actions made by your country regarding the topic ◦ May want to include allies here Fourth Paragraph: What your country proposes should be done to resolve the issue Fifth Paragraph: Bottom line of what must be done

Use a sophisticated tone ◦ Try to broaden your vocabulary ◦ Do make sure that you know what you are saying Do not speak in the first person! ◦ Use your country’s name instead of “I” Add the United Nations’ seal to the top left corner to make it look official Have your helpful Vice Pres read it over ◦ Write it ahead of time!
