3 What might an appropriate definition be for MIXTURE? Mixture – 2 or more materials physically put together Each ingredient keeps its own properties The mixture can be separated using physical properties (magnetism, filtration, evaporation, size) Heterogeneous Mixtures – are not evenly mixed (you can see individual parts) Examples: Italian dressing, cereal in milk Homogeneous Mixtures – are well mixed (cannot see parts) Examples: Juice, sugar water, air

4 Is the tea a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? Solutions – homogeneous material in which a substance dissolves Examples: Gas: Air (78% N, 21% O, 1% other) Liquid: Sugar or salt water Solid: Steel (carbon & iron)

5 Dissolving – The process in which particles spread out and separate in a solution Soluble – Able to dissolve Insoluble – Unable to dissolve

6 Class Work Vocabulary Assignment: With your partner, you will need to cut out the vocabulary definitions and match them with the words on your sheet. Glue the definition in the blank box next to the correct vocabulary word. Try to do this without your notes (but take a peek at them if you need to ).

7 Matter: Atoms: Molecules: Compounds: Mixture: Heterogeneous: Homogeneous: Solid: Liquid: Gas: Anything that takes up space and has volume & mass The smallest particles of an element (made of protons, neutrons & electrons) When two atoms come together Molecules that have a least two different elements When two or more substances are together in the same place Parts do not combine completely or evenly Uniform distribution (parts are combined well) Particles are tightly packed together in an organized way (and have high density) Particles are tightly packed but not organized (substances form to the bottom of their container) Particles are spread out (and are less dense)
