Becoming one with the SLO The Zen Of Our Course and Program SLOs
2
SLOs and Program Review SLOs and their assessment are a part of Academic Program Review Found in Component V, Criterion 1 Each year faculty monitor and document progress on the Summary Work Plan Each semester assess SLO progress by course and program
3
How It All Began: The 4 Core Competencies SWC Core Competencies were developed and approved through shared governance. They identify: Outcomes we want for our students Skills in which we want our students to develop competency during their studies at SWC
4
All SLOs are based in one or more of our identified core competencies: 1. Communication 2. Thinking and Reasoning 3. Information Competency 4. Global Awareness SWC’s 4 Core Competencies
5
SLOs Communicated to Students Course Description: overview Course Objectives: what is covered SLOs: what students should be able to do after (pending SCEA negotiation) Measurement/Grades: assess outcomes
6
Course SLOs: Keep it Simple Are developed by all Faculty working together face-to-face or electronically to develop and revise Course SLOs Communicate to student what they should be able to do upon the successful completion of the course Are comprehensible and meaningful to our students Are based in our Core Competencies Help students participate more in their learning by working toward the identified outcomes Clarify student participation and responsibility in learning Can be measured during and/or at the end of the course Can be measured using rubrics that tell students clearly what will be measured and how Must have data based results
7
Program SLOs Organized by: General Education for Associate Degree Transfer Plan Career/Technical Education (CTE) Lifelong Learning
8
Program SLOs Include Degree/certificate/transfer completion Satisfactory or better level of skills in Core Competencies Timely employment
9
General Education Program SLOs: These SLOs are for students who successfully complete coursework for: AA or AS Degree in Major or Area of Emphasis (CSU Breadth or UC’s IGETC) Certificate Licensure in your program.
10
Program SLOs: Transfer Program Includes Major or Area of Emphasis (CSU Breadth or UC’s IGETC) Career Technical Education Programs Life Long Learning Programs Includes Basic Skills, Continuing Education, Personal Development, etc.
11
Program Methods of Assessment Are Data Based Annual number of students with degrees, transfer, certificates, licensure sorted by Major or AofE Student Pre/post Survey Employment Development Dept. Data for completers seeking employment Data provided by Research to Programs
12
Program SLOs are tracked by the college and include: Track number of degrees, certificates or licensures obtained annually Track number of transfer or employment Track student pre/post survey results For more information view the Program Matrix Program SLO Data
13
Assessment of SLOs Identify methods to measure SLOs by Course (See Rubric Template) Identify annual assessment/collegial consultation meetings: Keep Minutes Consider use of eLumen (internet and rubric based software available Jan. 2010) to Hold Assessment Data
14
eLumen Software Internet based Rubric based Goal is to provide student clear information on how their learning will be measured Rubrics identify clearly/concisely what goals are for learning Sample student work can be displayed to reinforce rubrics Specific Training will be provided soon!
15
Academic Program Review SLOs are a large part of Academic Program Review (APR) and our planning process. APR includes annual update of the Summary Work Plan Faculty discuss and document SLO Assessment Results as a part of APR Annual Update SLO assessment results are used to plan curriculum and instruction improvements (Closing the Loop) Meeting Planning Notes from Faculty discussion are saved electronically for Accreditation purposes.
