VISION To enable vocational experiences and / or paid employment opportunities for people with disabilities of all ages.MISSION To enable individuals with disabilities, to access, obtain and maintain paid employment via appropriate support.

THROUGH JOINT WORKING THE PROVISION OF SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT TO YOUNG PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES AND NHS STAFF HOW WAS IT ACHIEVED?

This definition has formed the basis of supported employment in the UK. It emphasises the principles that supported employment should take place in integrated jobs and not pre-vocational or sheltered work settings. UK supported employment is aimed at all disabled people: Learning disabilities Physical disabilities Sensory impairments Mental health conditions Who need support to find, maintain and sustain employment. Support needs to be short, medium or long-term. It involves training, job support, aids and adaptations and any other mechanism to ensure the support is effective. Real work: Real work settings Non disabled co-workers Are trained by experts in the job They take place over the duration of a “working day” We would expect payment for the work undertaken Zero reject philosophy An Overview of Supported Employment With the right sort of support, anyone who wants to can work

Stages of Supported Employment (and a selection of associated challenges) Get to know the jobseeker Individual jobsearch & matching Tailored work support plan “Fade” and monitor Managing referrals, active participation of all concerned, getting right information, funding pressures, keeping focussed, proper records Staff skills, active participation of jobseeker, record-keeping, marketing strategies, negotiation, pre-work preparation, influence of state benefits Avoiding dependency – and “dumping”, reaching for full potential, working with workplace team Facilitating integration and inclusion in all aspects of working life, developing career beyond first post, effective records

What is Supported Employment? The person is hired and paid by an employer, receiving full employee entitlements The job meets the person’s aspirations for employment Their work meets the employer’s requirements The employer and employee receive just enough help from a support organisation to ensure success
