1 How did the defeat of the Germans help us concentrate on the Pacific?

2 What was the battle of Stalingrad?  The German’s had plans to take over Stalingrad  Stalingrad was a major industrial city in Russia  The Russian’s defended the city and trapped the Germans who eventually surrendered  This battle was the turning point of the war in Europe

3 What was the battle of the Bulge?  After D-Day, Allies fought to retake the rest of France  It became obvious to Hitler that the Germans were losing  The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler’s final assault, his final attempt to win the war by splitting the allies in two

4 What was the Yalta Conference?  Allied leaders met in the Soviet resort of Yalta  They discussed how to end the war and what types of governments should be in place in Europe  It was “The Big Three”, Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt

5 How Did the War End?  April 30 th Hitler commits suicide  May 2 nd the Soviet army captures Berlin  5 Days later the German leaders sign an unconditional surrender at Eisenhower’s headquarters in France  The next day, may 8 th is declared V-E Day, Victory in Europe Day

6 What was the Holocaust?  Hitler had an intense hatred toward the Jews and blamed them for Germany’s problems  He enforced anti-Semitism prejudice against the Jews while he was in power  The policy was called “The Final Solution” and it set out to murder every Jew under German rule

7 What was the numbers of the Holocaust?  The Nazis killed 6 million Jewish, men, women and children (2/3 of the Jews in Europe)  The Nazis killed almost 5 million Gypsies, Russians, Poles, and undesirables

8 What was Happening in Japan?  At the same time as we were fighting the Nazi’s, Japan was growing their empire and taking control of much of the land in the Pacific

9 What was the Battle at Midway?  The Battle of Midway was the first time a battle was fought at sea without using the boats for fighting  The battle of Midway was the turning point for the war in the Pacific  The results: America blocked Japan’s advance towards Australia

10 What Strategies did America use in the War in the Pacific?  General Douglas MacAruthur was the commander of the U.S in the Pacific  Island hoping: American soldiers moved from island to island taking over the area. We started with the island that were less heavily guarded by the Japanese. This made it easier to launch future attacks.

11 Were we Successful?  Progress in the Pacific was slow on land  The battle of Guadalcanal was the first U.S. land victory against the Japanese  The Navajo Indians played a major part in this victory by serving as Code Talkers: Navajo Indians recruited by the U.S. Marines Corps to transmit messages so the Japanese could not break American code

12 What was The Manhattan Project?  The Manhattan Project was the secret government program to develop the atomic bomb

13 What was the G.I Bill of Rights  When the soldiers came back from the war many of them were displaced. They found in hard to get good jobs or afford housing. The G.I Bill helped veterans pay for education and living expenses
