2 What is Imperialism? Imperialism is a policy in which a strong nation seizes and dominates the political, economic, and social aspects of another country Imperialism did not begin in the 1800s Europeans began to win empires as early as 1492 Europeans would start a second wave of imperialism in the 1800s

3 Causes of Imperialism? Industrial Revolution –Need for resources & market for goods Nationalism –Loyalty & devotion to ones own country (superiority) “Sense of national consciousness exalting (holding) one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or groups” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) White man’s burden –Duty to take Christianity & civilization to “heathen” & “savage” nations Social Darwinism –Racism, or theory that Europeans were a superior race

6 Imperialistic Motives Economic – make money, control trade, new markets, raw materials (industry), cheap labor, investments, export technology Political – gain power, competition, expand territory, prestige, national pride, security, colonies Religious – spread Christianity, protect missionaries, spread values morals and beliefs (nationalistic racism?), educate, end slave trade Exploratory – explore, scientific research, medical searches (cures and causes), adventure, investigate cultures Ideological – cultural values- belief that whites are superior=others were primitive, civilize people, EMPIRES, only the strongest survive

7 Scramble for Africa Europeans feared war amongst themselves over the claim territory in Africa, the met at the Berlin Conference to set ground rules to split up Africa Without regard to the multiple ethnic groups, Europeans created political boundaries all across the continent of Africa

10 Europeans Claim Muslim Lands Europeans sought to gain control over specific geographic locations by taking the Ottoman Empire Construction of the Suez Canal began in Egypt, funded by Europeans Push to exploit(ed) Persia in the 1900s upon the discovery of oil

13 British Imperialism in India The British considered India the brightest “jewel in the crown” India’s population made for a large scale work force, on top of the countries abundance in resources The Sepoy, group of Indians, rebel and British counter the rebellion as a result they use a more strict and racist enforcement of India for the next 90 years until Gandhi and other forces win(s) India’s independence in 1947, and as a byproduct created Pakistan

15 Imperialism in Southeast Asia Europeans carved up the Pacific Rim, or countries that bordered the Pacific Ocean –France Indochina –British Singapore –Dutch Indonesia –Germany Marshall Islands

16 U.S. Imperialism in the Pacific Most Americans were against imperialism, however, the ambitious and business world pressed for colonization –U.S. wins the Spanish American War and acquired Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam –Hawaii became an interest because it was a port on the way to china and lucrative business of sugar plantations, American Businessmen overthrew Hawaii’s monarchy and annexed the island to the U.S.

17 Results of Imperialism Imperialism primarily had a negative impact on the colonized countries As a by product some positives where improvements in: –Literacy –Education –Health –Sanitation
