Organic vs. Local Organic – refers to HOW it is grown – Free of synthetic chemicals – Farmers use insects, crop rotation and other natural means to control pests – No antibiotics or hormones – Workers aren’t exposed to potentially dangerous level of chemicals Local – refers to WHERE it was grown – Reach the market faster – Fresher – Lower carbon foot print – Supports local farmers and the local economy – Animal treatment methods are more transparent Bottom Line – it is better to eat produce (conventional, organic, local) of any kind rather than eat no produce at all!

Other Farmer’s Market Terms Organic beef and poultry: Must be raised organically on certified organic pastures Must be fed certified organic feed for their entire lives No drugs, antibiotics or growth hormones are allowed* Must have year-round outdoor access The animals’ organic feed cannot contain animal by-products, antibiotics or genetically engineered grains and cannot be grown using persistent pesticides or chemical fertilizers. *Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones in raising pork and poultry.

Other Farmer’s Market Terms Organic milk: Must have year-round access to the outdoors and access to the pasture during grazing season A certain amount of their pasture intake must come from a pasture that was untreated by synthetic herbicides and pesticides Must have been fed an exclusive organic diet Cannot be treated with synthetic hormones Cannot be given antibiotics

Other Farmer’s Market Terms Organic eggs: Poultry are fed organic feed Laying hens must have access to the outdoors Laying hens cannot be raised in cages Egg producers cannot use antibiotics except during infectious outbreaks No forced molting is allowed Must maintain basic animal welfare standards
